The name «Royale Réserve» refers to the ancestors of the Philipponnat family, vineyard owners, shopkeepers and winemakers, suppliers to Louis XIV, magistrates and Maires Royaux of Ay. Royale Réserve Brut is the purest expression of the Maison's style. This cuvée, which offers a beautiful balance between structure, length in the mouth and vinosity, reveals the quintessence of the character of the Mareuil-sur-Ay territory, dominant in the blend, in which Pinot Noir strongly predominates. Aging on yeasts in the cellars of the Maison, at a constant temperature of 12°C for three years, which is much more than the legal minimum of fifteen months. After three years of aging on the lees, Royale Réserve Brut acquires a pleasant maturity while retaining a magnificent freshness.

Maison Philipponnat

The historic Maison Phillipponnat, universally recognized as one of the most important Champagne houses, was founded in 1522 in Mareuil-sur-Ay. It had the privilege of being a supplier to the French king Louis XIV and, over the centuries, it has managed to maintain a leading international role. The village of Mareuil, practically a single street dotted with small vignerons, is located in the center of Champagne, at the point where the three large areas into which the region is divided meet: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Cote des Blancs. Philipponnat owns 20 hectares of vineyards located not only in Mareuil, but also in the municipalities of Ay, Mutigny and Avenay, all magnificently exposed to the South. The excellence of the vineyards is constituted by the Clos des Goisses: 5.5 hectares of vineyards so suited to make the production of a vintage possible even in the least favorable years. The term "goisses" is the feminine of "gois", which means "very difficult to work", in fact the slope which goes from 30° to 45° is such as to make it impossible to use agricultural machinery, so all the work carried out in the "clos" are performed manually, as in past centuries. From this small vineyard was born a historic label of the maison which became very famous in Italy also because it was Gianni Agnelli's favourite. Pierre Philipponnat purchased this wonderful vineyard in 1935 from the Visconti d'Ay family and today it is considered a treasure of inestimable value. Today Charles Philipponnat, heir to this glorious family tradition, continues the work of his predecessors with great passion and competence to maintain the name and prestige of the maison high. The unique and inimitable style of the maison is the fruit of centuries-old savoir faire both in the vineyard and in the cellar which includes careful and scrupulous management of the vineyards, linked to a profound environmental sensitivity, and a vast heritage of reserve wines aged in wood with solera method. This is how Philipponnat Champagnes are born, known throughout the world, among the best interpreters of the type.
