The Decugnano dei Barbi estate

Wine has been produced in Decugnano since 1212. The Barbi family continues the tradition. The origin of the name Decugnano is obscure and has been lost over the centuries, but as early as 1212 these lands produced wine for the clergy of Orvieto. They were the lands of the church of Santa Maria di Decugnano. In 1973 Claudio Barbi found Decugnano abandoned and immediately fell in love with it. The first wines came out in 1978 and the success was immediate. Did you know Decugnano dei Barbi produced the first Umbrian classic method (1978 vintage) and the first Italian noble rot (1981 vintage). The tremendous upheavals of the geological eras, time and the hand of man, have created a unique terroir in Decugnano dei Barbi. The soils are ocean floors from the Pliocene period. The vineyards have their roots in the sandy and clayey earth, among fossils of shells and oysters, giving that mineral and marine character characteristic of our wines. The altitude of over 300 meters favors proper ventilation and an ideal temperature range to enhance the aromas. While the optimal exposure of the vineyards to the sun guarantees perfect ripening of the grapes..
